A total of 530 poems written by 138 poets competed for awards in this year's competition. Of the poets whose poems qualified for 1st Round Honor Scroll honors, 99 were women and 39 were men. After several eliminations rounds, finalists included 34 poems by 22 women and 12 men. Youngest entrant turned 51 in 2008; oldest entrant stated his age as 103, with next-eldest poet celebrating her 99th birthday in May 2008 (See Ida Fasel, Golden Pen Award honoree).

Age groups of the 34 Senior Poets Laureate Award winners whose laureate poems competed for the National Awards were:

50-59: 4        60-69: 11        70-79: 11        80-89: 7        90+: 1

Winners' professions, careers and occupations both before retirement and currently were: Education (teachers and administrators), 8; Health care (1 doctor, 1 nurse, 2 caseworkers, 2 psychologists), 6; Office workers, 4; Military (retired), 4; Sales, 3; Arts & Crafts, 3; Business Owners, 2; Clergy, 1; Farming, 1; Manufacturing, 1; Stone Mason, 1.

All signs of the zodiac were represented. They are listed here in order of numbers of entrants, from the most to the least: Virgo, 7; Taurus, 5; Cancer, 4; Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio, 3 each; Capricorn, Gemini and Sagittarius, 2 each; Aries, Leo and Libra, 1 each.
