EVER AFTER HAS ITS MOMENTSI rode Ginger down a lane and there he was, my ever after. I, on my old horse, knobby and gray, he, with cow manure on his boots, little brother in hand. Soft sunset behind bibbed figures. Grant Wood gaunt. Curfew hurried me home, my heart filled with the boy, after image aglow. A daughter asks how we met. He says, "She rode her white charger down my lane, chased the pretty maidens away. Held me for ransom that no one could pay. So I kept her ever after."
