Living Poet

Katherine A. Sherin-Zauner

You lie
on antiseptic sheets,
plastic tubing delivering
life-sustaining substances.

I hold your hand
and hear a faint echo:
hope, hope, hope.

KATHERINE A. SHERIN-ZAUNER 80, Venice, Florida, was 2007 Florida Senior Poet Laureate. She is a retired teacher who spent many hours traveling around Florida, giving poetry presentations to everyone from young students to senior citizens. Then, a severe bout with Shingles, that lasted for months, ended her travels. Her husband of 54 years, Nicholas, nursed her through her painful ordeal, only to fall ill with an MRSA infection of his spine. Their caregiving roles reversed, with Katherine sitting by his bedside. Nick succumbed unexpectedly in June 2009. Katherine shares her blessing and compassion for others who have suffered loss in this poem about love that continues even after death.
