TO HAVE OR HAVE NAUGHT

"For richer for poorer"

Wind blew snow around his feet.
worn-out shoes, no laces,
possessions in a bag
held by gloveless hands,
he moved aimlessly, cold, hungry,
lost in his nothingness.

A well-dressed man rushed from his limo
past this homeless one.
Oblivious to human suffering,
he yelled back to his chauffeur,
"I'm late, pick me up at nine for dinner.
" The poor man stood gaunt.
clutching his belongings, muttering,
"When will I eat again?"

An old car stopped at the curb
next to this lost soul,
car door opened, driver beckoned.
In a slow jerky motion
the old man crawled into the car.
He saw five frail, hungry
children in the back.

The driver turned and said,
"Sir,we don't have much to eat,
but we will share what we have with you
this cold winter night."
The youngest child put her arms around
the stranger's neck
and whispered in his ear,

"Will you be my grandpa?"
