AMERICA WAS BEAUTIFUL

Democracy, democracy,
how dare we sing thy praise,
while Washington's hypocrisy
is gnawing on thy base?
America, America,
wake up and see the light,
your values, dreams and livelihood
are trampled left and right.

When we could sing of brotherhood
we still had shining seas,
now terror rules the neighborhood
"homeland security."
The oceans are polluted slop
with oil and sewer waste,
the purple-mountain majesty
no longer fits our taste.

Democracy's forced to its knees,
one man one vote a sham,
it's vote machines and pollsters' pleas,
and sound bite media scam.
Our Liberty is shedding tears
for she feels so betrayed,
that exploitation large and small
has politicians swayed.

How can we take democracy
back in our hearts and land?
When thinking minds with honesty
reach out and hold their hands.
America, America,
wake up and see the light,
your values, dreams and livelihood
are trampled left and right.
